Cally's questions

And now some questions from Cally.

If you hadn't been sent to Cygnus Alpha, what would you be doing right now?

Either having a drink and a chat down at the local pub with my friends or sitting in my apartment with my feet up and a drink in my hand, and either a good book on my lap or some nice escapist fantasy on the vidscreen. I had myself set up well, you know. I had a squalid little apartment in my name with a few things in it so it looked lived-in (I'd drop by once a week or so to move things around and put stuff in the fridge) but my real place was subleased at several levels in different names. It was two family apartments knocked into one so I had some space, all painted white, latest entertainment tech money could buy or for that matter I could steal, and the nicest artworks and statues I've lifted--I specialised in tech and art, you know, with a few banks on the side for living capital.

I only ever had to do a few jobs a year to keep myself in comfort. Nice hours, those.

Are you upset with me over what I did after Trantor? In the shuttle, I mean.

Not any more; only at the time. Never see the point in dwelling on the past--you can't change it can you? It worked out all right in the end.

What do you miss most about Earth? Other than the height of the Himalayas.

Nothing now. I mean, I suppose I missed what I used to have--my mum and my friends and all that. I lost them all years ago. All right, I had mates down the pub I shared a drink and a joke with, but I doubt they missed me that much. I never knew them well enough to tell them my last name or where I lived.

That was the one thing wrong with that apartment, you know. No-one to share it with.

What recipe do you know that you think I would enjoy?

Umm, spicy spring rolls? Vegetables and chilli and mung-beans and sauce and those tiny little bean-thread noodles, all wrapped in filo pastry, brushed with sesame oil, and baked till golden. Yum.

If you could have one thing that would make your life better right now, what would it be?

Now I've found Kerril, security. A safe future.
